Fraternities and fraternal societies date back centuries. As with all long lasting institutions, Greek letter organizations have gone through periods of change, sometimes for the better, sometimes not. In todays society, you might wonder if any reason still exists to GO GREEK . The answer may surprise you. Fraternities are still a vibrant part of the Loyola community. They still provide the best opportunity to meet people and make new friends, develop leadership skills, and make a difference on the campus and in the community.
Academics is probably your greatest concern as well it should
be. Your academic transcript is the greatest determinant of your
career success. The primary mission of all fraternities is to
encourage and develop high scholastic achievement among its members.
It's also important to note that while only 50% of all college
males graduate from their freshman institution, the graduation
rate for fraternity members is over 70%.
These days it takes more than a good transcript to get a job - employers are looking for leadership experience. As a fraternity man, you'll be a leader as an officer, committee member, or just a participant. You'll learn how to manage a budget, run effective meetings, speak in public, and motivate others. More than 80% of Fortune 500 executives and U. S. Presidents this century were fraternity men. So too were the men of Apollo XI.
Fraternities are part of the
greater campus and thus contribute to the community in a variety
of ways. Many Greek organizations volunteer their time to causes
like Habitat for Humanity, Project America, or the American Heart
Association. They fully participate in the Intra Mural sports
program and many varsity athletes are fraternity men. A Fraternity
man founded The Maroon, The Wolf, and many Greeks
have headed the Student Government Association and University
Programing Board.
There are other advantages to fraternity membership like networking and travel. Many fraternities have houses in places you may need to visit. When traveling to these places, you'll be have a place to stay and instant friends in town. And when its time to look for that summer job or internship, you'll have had the opportunity to meet your organizations alumni, giving you an inside advantage to finding the position that's right for you.
Above all, through you fraternity experience you'll make friendships that will last a lifetime. These friendships, what we call brotherhood, will be deeper and closer than any others in your life. Brotherhood is the foundation of the fraternity experience and combines the best of individualism and communal respect and cooperation. Your fraternity brothers will be at your side to share in your successes and offer you support in your disappointments. Brotherhood means having a family no matter the distance or situation.
